Q: Are you a Feminist?
Answers?
*not even close
...why? .....too whiney. it embarrasses me ...So then, what are you? .....just a regular woman .......np: But you believe men are superior. .........nope. I'm a regular woman married to a regular man. I make more than him ...........And you believe that you should have that right, correct? And the right to have your own bank account, or an account where you don't need your husband's permission to withdraw money? .............that's not close to the kind of lives we lead. Not even close ...........Those things were legalized in the US loooong before there was the label "feminism." .............No! They actually WEREN'T. That's a misconception. ...............Women weren't allowed to have bank accounts before the 1960's? .................the women's movement didn't start in the 1960's. ever heard of susan b. anthony? ...................I'm talking about the label "feminism" The word. That's what the OP asked. .....................If you were married, everything had to be cosigned. However, if your husband wanted to drain the account, he did NOT need to get the wife's permission (the opposite wasn't true.) Sh*t - I used to know the exact years all of this legislation went through .......................who lives like this? .........................Very few women - NOW. Because of feminism. That's the point. We take it for granted, now. ...........................You have the ability to take it for granted and find it boring because of some really brave, amazing women. I know - my mom was one of them. .............................certain men are superior to certain women, vv, what does that make me? ...............................Silly. .................................realistic ...................................np: a bit refreshing, actually *no *yes *yep *No *absolutely ...ditto *God no *nope *definitely no *Of course *no *in some aspects no and in others yes *No *I can't believe how many people have said no ...ita ...Ditto. They're all liars. ...i know it doesn't make any sense ...Me neither. Really, really sad. Mainstream media has managed to twist the message so completely that women now are afraid of feminism... when all it was intended to mean was that women should be able to CHOOSE how to live their lives. .....don't blame the media .....I don't think mainstream media pays much attention. The militant branch of the movement has taken over. .......np. What is the 'militant' branch? Who is in the branch? What are their goals? (I'm fascinated as a feminist academic) .........I'd like to know this, too. I only hear about these militants on right wing radio shows! ...........Go to any bookstore and look in the "women's study" section. .............I've written some of the books in that section and I don't know what you're talking about. Please give me some examples. ...............God, all of it. It's all either about how the patriarchy gets women down, or very outdated research about girls not succeeding in high school. Or Naomi Wolf building a tree house with her dad and realizing how great men are. lol .................You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Naomi Wolf has no real credibility within feminism, she's just good for sensational press. ...................See some of the researchers listed below. What issues do you have with them? .....................That's a cop out answer. One of the most popular "feminist" books right now is The Mommy Myth and those two women are about as far from militant as you could get. .......................np. And, academically speaking, Judith Butler, Chandra Mohanty, Wendy Brown, Laura Kipnis, Gayatri Spivak, Caren Kaplan, etc. are the big names. I'd love to know what you consider militant about their work. .........................I heart you. I'm not a Kaplan fan but that's just me. BUT, Feminism W/Out Borders was amazing & ITA - where's the militantism in that? .........................ita .....I don't think that is the fault of the mainstream media. Read some Andrea Dworkin and tell me parts of feminist theory isn;t nuts .......Andrea Dworkin in no way represents feminism as a whole. Most of the most ardent opponents to Dworkin are feminists themselves. .........that may be true, but I used to be a big feminist and most of the people I knew were sad scared women who felt persecuted by the mainstream. It didn't seem like a good way to live my life. I think the original ideas are great of course - equal pay, independence, working in whatever field I choose. Somehow though the movement got derailed IMO. People get mad at me if I say I'm a feminist and a republican like I can't be both. ...........Do you know anything about third wave feminism? .............There are crazy women on both sides of the fence. ...............very very true ......."feminist" can mean a lot of different things. it tends to have a militant connotation .........No, it really just means equal rights, equal pay. You've just bought into the hype. .........NOW can get pretty strident ...........i choose to! haha, it's my choice as a woman to believe what i want .....And whiney! So very whiney! .......They don't understand the definition of "feminist", I think. .........I agree. ...........we're stupid? .............See discussion above. Unless I'm mistaken, and you truly think men are superior to women...in which case, then, yes, you're stupid. .............I don't think anyone is superior to anyone. feminists are nuts ...............Intelligent. ........I think the generation of women in their 20's and early 30's generally aren't facing the same kind of society that feminism grew out of, so they don't really see the need for it, it's irrelevent for them. But it's unfortunate because a real backlash taking place and it feels like we might be going backwards. ...........how so? ........I'll eat my hat when they relinquish part of their pay to a male collegue *Absolutely *no *wow, such a divide! *yes, altough I firmly believe in gender differences *GLORIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...whatever. I'm a feminist but I'm not a fan of the vanilla middle-of-the-road non-threatening Gloria * considering the definition is one who things men and women are equal (note, not same, equal); Yes! *of course *no *No ...so you don't believe men and women are equal? *equal rights for women? yes. A woman's movement that gets hijacked by gay and racial issues? No (although I might support them independently). ...That's Rush Limbaugh talking. Feminism is about equality & a woman's right to live her life.. .....No, that's a femenist talking. The feminist movement got hijacked. That's why so many women don't identify with it. .......so, i guess you've had it with gay and black women * define it first- means very different things to lots of women ...men and women are equal, should be paid equally, and not limited by their gender in pursuing their goals .....well then yes, obviously. but i think the word has obtained so much baggage over the years. wish everyone could use this definition. .......the word was co-opted and distorted. but i don't care. i'm a feminist *No *of course *Of course. How could one not be? *No *I'm post-feminist *I'm not * in what I consider the true sense of the word yes - women are equal to men and should have every opportunity to live the way they see fit. In the commonly used sense of the word? No - women are being held back by men, abortion is a sacrament. women and men are exactly the same. No way ...Who uses feminism like that? .....read any feminist theory lately? .......Yes, I do for a living. I'd love some examples. ...oh, the humanity *no way *of course *yup, you bet
