Dear CAKE Girls,
As much as I love NYC, SF called and I had to answer. Thanks to all my new SF friends for the warm welcome and all the CAKE love and support! Some highlights from the road for y’all:
CAKE CONNECT:
At the first CAKE SF get together at the XYZ bar at the W, a bunch of fun excited girls came out to celebrate and check out the CAKE book. Turns out we crashed Pattie Boyd’s (aka Layla) photo opening, but she didn’t mind.. At our joint event I met a local news anchor who was so excited about the content in the book, he told me about his own experience in San Francisco exploring bisexuality after being a part of the gay male community for 20 years. So creating a public language for sexual experience is good for everyone!
TIPS FROM THE MILE HIGH CLUB:
On the plane ride here I sat behind two SF women discussing a confidence-building seminar for men. Of course I had to get in on the conversation and I popped up from my row for three hours of girl-talk. Aside from trading advice about career goals, family planning, love, and sex, they both recommended the Esalen Hot Springs in Big Sur as one of the most beautiful places in the world. After my own 1am-3am clothing optional soak under the stars I would have to agree.
ACCESSIBLE RHETORIC:
At a quiet lunch on the Berkeley campus Mindy Friedman, The Daily Californian sex columnist and fem-sex student, told me about her goals to write about sex in an accessible way. She recommended a lecture on campus: Linda Williams on Hard-Core Eroticism. Professor Williams used images from “In the Realm of the Senses” a porn/erotic/art/mainstream Japanese flick from 1977 along with Japanese wood cut art and “western moving image pornography” to discuss the room we have in movies to explore sex, art, and pleasure. At a Bitch Magazine reading at the City Lights bookstore, I debated with the senior editor about feminist action and listened to a good analysis of the Jennifer/Brad/Angelina triangle: Jennifer - she’s the good girl, Angelina - she’s the bad girl, and Brad gets to run around with no judgment at all.
A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND:
At a meeting at the Good Vibrations office, the GV crew got down to give out free vibrators to CAKE Guests at Hot Stuff and Carol Queen invited me to a reading for her new book Whipped, at the Center for Sex and Culture. Violet Blue, in tight thin shiny black pants read about a hot wet encounter, Carol told us about how her first domme experience was a permanent part of her goddess within and Charlie read a perfectly politically correct and incorrect story about flogging on the first date, the night of the disappointing last election, to celebrate one last night of freedom. Of course I joined in the fun and read a bit from the CAKE Power chapter, offering a light and simple example of sexuality, power, and pleasure as a part of every day life.
After the reading I had soda and sex talk with Kim Airs, who just traded in her Boston sexuality retail store, Grand Opening, for a life of sexuality education on the road. We talked about motorcycles, Boston escort services, sex tips for girls, and cock rings. A fountain of knowledge, that one. More from Kim when we get together again this week and dish with Midori, fellow sexuality educator, artist, performer and writer.
San Francisco, you’re diverse, open, political and hot. What else could a CAKE SF Girl want? Well, just more CAKE of course! SF get some CAKE and take it for all it’s worth! Come to HOT STUFF and meet other women who love expressing sexuality every day. Get decked out and get hot! Check out other guests and first time CAKE SF dancers! In a city full of experimentation and love, make some time in your week to get turned on. See you on Thursday!
Love,
Emily for CAKE.
