Supreme Rights

The Supreme Court heard arguments yesterday in an important case focusing on abortion rights.  The case, Ayotte (The attorney general in New Hampshire arguing the case) v. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, challenges two longstanding pillars of abortion rights and reproductive freedom   The decision will have real-world consequences for the lives of women.

Beginning with its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, the court has always ruled that any restrictions on abortion rights must contain exceptions to protect a woman's health and life.  New Hampshire lawmakers ignored this standard in 2003 when they passed a parental notification law that omitted any exception for medical problems that were not life-threatening.  A decision in favor of the further restrictions would give a green light to states to pass laws that deny women access to abortion in medical emergencies.
