Sexpocracy!

By emily, Section Love, Emily

Nothing dominates the news like a good sex scandal! Personally I prefer the sorted details of cops dressed in plain clothes looking for airport bathroom action, but any old politician linked to a prostitution ring will do the trick. Oh Silda, honey, do you really have to stand by your man? I wish someone would give you the mic so we could all understand if you've been living in a sexless marriage, or if you've simply made arrangements of your own.

When you're done scouring the internets for the dirty details, go to Glenn Greenwald for a reminder of why we shouldn't care what happens what happens between other people's sheets, and skim down Scott Horton's additional questions about how Spitzy found himself in such hot water in the first place.

Strip Club Blues

I finally met a strip club I didn't like.

It wasn't the florescent lights outside and auto body shop design, because that sort of kitch does the trick for me. It wasn't the pudgy door guy playing a hand held video game, because hey, it's a boring job and letting people into a nudie bar isn't that different from letting them into any old club with a basic door policy of hand over the cash and in you go. It wasn't the full vulval display I got as soon as I walked in the door, because that's what I'm here for, right?

Let's hear it from the boys

People are always hemming and hawing about the sexualization of young women in media - pointing to ads of girls in make-up and short skirts. But would it be any better if girls were being paraded around all buttoned in frills and petticoats - the picture of modesty itself? No matter what, image of kids dressed like adults are creepy - the boys in brooks brother's ads for example. Images of money / power / masculinity start early too. I'm hard pressed to find a book about sexuality and masculinity that I'd be excited to read. I'm sure guys out there think deeply about their roles, their bodies and how culture effects their sexual pleasure. We need some more men to step up to the plate!

A Rant on "The Boyfriend Sofa"
by Jay Ruttenberg,
NY Times Style Mag, November 5, 2006.

It all starts on a sunny Saturday when the girlfriend character "drags" the boyfriend character (the author) on a shopping trip, a frequent outing for the cozy couple. Yes, Jay, I agree - it would be so much easier if you went off to do your on thing on Saturday and met up with your dressed-to-the-nines girlfriend later so you could close your eyes to the effort that went into the costumed affair and blissfully enjoy the benefits. But we all have to pay our dues, don't we?

Monday night Burlesque

All American Amateur Burlesque
First Monday of the Month - 10pm
@ Galapagos - Williamsburg, NY

Why would a woman dress up as a bawdy, divorced, middle aged, Sinatra-loving show biz guy and host burlesque around the city? Because that's how you get all the ladies....

Galapagos' amateur burlesque night features drag king host Murray Hill and a bunch of unknowns competing against each other and the reigning champion for cash. June's contest included one perfect pin-up, a red light stripper, a fumbling surfer, a blushing boy, and a disco belly dancer. None of the acts were particularly hot, but I'm always up for checking out new performers, costumes, themes and props. I'd go again, just to see Murray make fun of the Williamsburg crowd and grill the contestants after their act till they run off stage with only their pasties in tact.

Bettie Page - Calculated or Clueless?

I checked out the new Bettie Page movie to see how she became one of the most popular pin-up models in the 50's as well as a cult-figure embraced by modern women. I expected a strong theme of female empowerment, but alas, it's not so simple. The Notorious Bettie Page can't be pinned down to one clear path - her story is a mix of self-direction, religious pressure, legal constraints, sexist culture, and sexual exploration.

A Response to the SF Weekly Cover Piece on CAKE

By emily, Section Love, Emily

I came out to SF in February to plan an event with Jenny Stark -- a long time CAKE member, to hook up with Carol Queen, Midori, Good Vibes, and the Center of Sex and Culture -- and to meet other cool sexy CAKE women. After almost six years of work in NY and London, and a successful SF event, I was very happy to land the cover of the SF Weekly and see CAKE welcomed as “outpost of mainstream, third-wave, sex-positive feminism.”
