CAKE makes cameo appearances under the covers of two new books. Em and Lo's Rec Sex defines CAKE parties as "Sex-positive, female centered themed dance parties in NYC and London featuring lap dancers, lingerie and hipster porn a.k.a. the biggest make-out sesh you've ever see," and Merlin Bronques catches CAKE dancers in action in the print version of Last Night's Party.

Shortbus - a sneak peek

By CAKE, Section Seal of Approval
Posted on Tue Sep 05, 2006 at 02:31:40 PM EST

Shortbus, the new movie by the director of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, is centered around one woman's search for an orgasm. At first she thinks it's just a myth; that the female orgasm doesn't exist, or if it does, she must have lost some connection between her brain and her clitoris because she sure as hell hasn't had one. When, in the end, she does come, she comes easily...but only after exploring vibrators, fantasies, identity, performance, and most importantly community.

We love Ed Norton! Go see his new film - The Illusionist. It's a sexy, moving film that combines romance, politics and magic. Love, sex, magic, romance and thrills? Lovin' it. The Illusionist is the latest film from the producers of the Oscar winners Crash and Sideways. Yummy stuff.

The Pool @ McCarren Park - Sunday, August 13th

Alrighty boys and girls, get ready to get your groove on at this summer's best kept secret - The rockin' Pool Parties at McCarren Park in Brooklyn. This pool party features a 50,000 sq foot waterless pool where you can take in some of the best live music for FREE. Oh yeah there is also a gigantic slip and slide for those of you who want to get wet and a full on, no joke dodgeball court ala Ben Stiller style where amateur teams come decked out to fight it out. Don't miss the beer, burgers, rock and roll and glorious open sky.

JELLYNYC presents... POOL PARTIES

"With a lineup to get the indie kids drooling (and dancing!), this Sunday's McCarren Park throwdown proves you don't need water for a killer pool party. The blogsphere's favorite troubadour, Beirut, harnesses his Farfisa organ, vintage squeezebox, and a few friends to serenade the kids with a set of gypsy folk-influenced precocious pop ballads. Bay Area art punks Deerhoof return to NYC for the first time sans guitarist/bassist Chris Cohen. Be sure to catch soulful, rock n' rollicking trio Apollo Sunshine, the always-exuberant jangle-pop-rockers Harlem Shakes, and a special DJ slot from the Roots' ?uestlove." - FLAVOR PILL

THIS SUNDAY, AUGUST 13th, 2-8 pm - The Pool @ McCarren Park, Brooklyn
Featuring performances by:
DEERHOOF
BEIRUT
APOLLO SUNSHINE
HARLEM SHAKES
w/ DJ ?UESTLOVE

Check out The Pool Parties for more updates!

Wild Girls: The next generation of Women Artists @ Exit Art

By emily, Section Seal of Approval

Most of the pieces in Wild Girls stick to the feminist art script. You've got your hand stitched canvasses and bedazzled objects symbolic of traditional "women's" work, video clips publicly projecting private daily rituals, as well as fashion shots of period-stained underwear and glossy portraits of older women that beautify aspects of womanhood usually perceived as ugly.

Thankfully, Bulgarian video-artist Boryana Rossa comes to rescue us from the confines of domestic commentary. In the video "The Last Valve" she is filmed stitching her pussy lips together while attached to a lo-fi looking bio-feedback machine. Ouch! Yes, it's painful to watch, but it moves beyond defining female and explores what is "human,” through the eyes of a woman as well as a machine. The movie was is billed as an Ultrafuturo project - an "international group which works in the intersection of technology, ethics and human/machine identity."

Check it out this wild work at:

Exit Art, 475 10th Ave at 36th Street
New York, NY 10018
TIL August 26, 2006
Gallery Hours:
Tuesday-Thursday 10am-6pm;
Friday 10am-8pm; Saturday 12 noon-8pm;
Closed Sunday and Monday

Lady Sovereign

There's just something about a girl with a chain around her neck, a side pony tail, smudgy black eyeliner, and black nail polish that gets to me...in a good way. Say what you will about Lady Sovereign's karaoke rapping - it doesn't matter because i'm not in it for the music. Just leave me to fantasize about girls with scratchy voices and dirty british accents who say fuck a lot and can hold a stage down on their own.

Following her after-party performance at Plumm last night, she said anyone from the audience could come right over to where she was hanging out to talk to her and she totally wouldn't turn us away. Not true. Maybe next time...

How the Pro-Choice Movement Saved America

How the Pro-Choice Movement Saved America -
Sex, Virtue, and the Way We Live Now

by Cristina Page

CAKE absolutely recommends this book!

Pro-sex, pro-women, pro-contraception - PRO-CHOICE! Cristina Page is right on with her arrgument that it is in fact the pro-choice movement, not the pro-lifers, which rejoices in every societal advance that has come from women's simple control over our reproduction and sexuality. She also debunks the entire pro-life movement by proving that all of their tactics increase rather than decrease unplanned pregnancies and abortions, especially later term abortions. Specifically the pro-life movement is against contraception and emergency contraception both of which are proven to reduce the need for abortion. We love that at the core of her argument are reproductive and sexual rights, which are the key to equality, including being free to be sexual and explore your sexuality. Informative and easy and fun to read. Check it out now.
